We are one of a few select dental offices in the Lancaster County area where the entire implant process is handled here in our office. The average dental practice will refer patients to a variety of specialists for the implant procedures. Because of Dr. Herres’ specialized training in implant placements, our patients never have to leave the familiar comforts of Dr. Herres and his staff.
Through a process known as osseointegration, in which titanium metal is fused with the jawbone, small titanium screws are placed in the jaw via a comfortable outpatient surgical procedure, here in our office. After a period of healing, a crown is then placed over the implant, replacing the missing tooth (or teeth). If properly cared for, dental implants can last a lifetime, as opposed to bridges and dentures, which need to be replaced every seven to 15 years.
We can place implants into a jaw with no remaining teeth and use the posts to act as retaining clips for a denture. After doing so, the bulkier parts of the denture can be trimmed away leaving the patient far more comfortable eating, chewing and speaking. It has literally changed the lives of a number of our patients.
A dental bridge is a fixed (non-removable) appliance and is a very practical option to replace missing teeth.
There are several types of bridges. Porcelain fixed bridges are the most popular because they resemble the look and feel or your teeth. This type of bridge consists of two crowns that go over two anchoring teeth (abutment teeth) and are attached to pontics (artificial teeth), filling the gap created by one or more missing teeth.
Dental bridges are highly durable and will last many years, however, they may need replacement or need to be re-cemented due to normal wear.
Getting a bridge usually requires two or more visits. While the teeth are numb, the two anchoring teeth are prepared by removing a portion of enamel to allow for a crown. Next, a highly accurate impression (mold) is made which will be sent to a dental laboratory where the bridge will be fabricated. In addition, a temporary bridge will be made and worn for several weeks until your next appointment.
At the second visit, your permanent bridge will be carefully checked, adjusted, and cemented to achieve a proper fit. Occasionally we may only temporarily cement the bridge, allowing your teeth and tissue time to get used to the new bridge. The new bridge will be permanently cemented at a later time.
Our dentists will provide you with care instructions at the conclusion of your treatment. Proper brushing, flossing and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new permanent bridge.
